Winter Lecture Series - “First Ohio River Railroad Bridge”

February 13, 2019
Bellaire Public Library
The second in the 2019 GSV Historical Educational Society's 2019 Winter Lecture Series will be held on February 13 from 6-9 p.m. at the Bellaire Public Library, 3330 32nd St. in Bellaire. The topic, "First Ohio River Railroad Bridge", will be presented by David A. Simmons. The first railroad bridge was built across the Ohio River at Steubenville in 1865. It was completed during the Civil War only after Congress addressed their obligation to mediate between railroad and river transportation on the river. In addition, the project marked the establishment of the Army Corps of Engineers’ oversight over all river crossings. Further, the Steubenville Bridge set an engineering precedent that was followed throughout the Ohio Valley and, for the first time, set a standard of full-size testing of bridge components. It also defined a new corporate framework for designing and building major stream crossings. The lecture is illustrated with nearly a hundred historic images. David A. Simmons is a veteran of more than four decades working in the historic preservation office and on the editorial staff of their popular history journals. He is president of the Ohio Historic Bridge Association and received two degrees from Miami University. Admission is free to the public with light refreshments.
